Story Telling Unit - Pre Writing Practice

 Title – The Unknown

Genre – Drama

The idea – Amy Radcliffe is a young girl living with her parents in a quiet village. On her sixteenth birthday she is going through her parent’s attic in search of her childhood photos. Amongst these photos, she comes across a “Deed Poll” (name-change form). To her surprise, her name was on it. She then confronts her parents and demanded to know what hasn’t been told to her. They begin to tell her about their past. Her adopted mother was unable to conceive and adopting was the only answer. They tried to explain to her that they too were hurt by not being able to have a child of their own. Amy disregards their honesty and storms out in a rage. Amy kept the papers, which she found and spends the night by her best friend where she plans to go on a quest to find her biological mother.

Amy managed to get an address from the Deed Poll papers and takes the first bus to Georgetown. Amy thought to herself that it wouldn’t be likely for her mother to still be living that that address anymore but she just needed to know. After a tiring journey to different houses she finally checks her last address. She rings the bell and is greeted by a man in his forties Breathless, she asks for Stephan Morgan only to find out she doesn’t live there anymore, yet again.  The man convinces Amy to take a walk with him; while walking she tells the man about her journey and what she found. They walk through a cemetery and stop at a tombstone with her mother’s name engraved.
He proceeds to tell her that her mother struggled with a fight against cancer. She is distraught about her mother’s death and not being fortunate enough to have met her.  After talking with her father about the life of her mother, she is happy that she actually met her father and is confident that they can have a good relationship.

Theme – The saying, “some things are better left unsaid” shouldn’t apply to family and loved ones as too many emotions are involved. The truth hurts, but sometimes it needs to be known.

Characters – Amy Radcliffe – Sixteen, she has brown hair, green eyes and pale skin. She is soft-spoken and timid. She values family greatly and is grateful that she has supportive parents that are always there to advise her. She is a perfectionist and a high achiever in school.

Adpoted Parents – Susan Radcliffe (Accountant) & Peter Radcliffe (Doctor).

Biological Mother – Stephan Morgan

Biological Father – David Morgan, 45, Mechanic. Light brown hair but it is receding.  Has laughter lines and seems gentle and soft, personality similar to Amy’s. Looks tired from lack of sleep.

Best Friend – Zoe Turner
